PIG BREEDING AND FEEDING

The Iberian pig is a descendant of his mediterraneus adapted to the harsh environmental conditions of the pasture. Its hardiness, herding behavior, adipogenic potential, anabolic metabolism and delayed development, its differences with characteristics of other races . From the start it based on their food consumption of Mediterranean forests acorns, which logically means that throughout its history has had to preparing and training themselves to transform the carbohydrates that are abundant in the acorn.
In these farms dominated the Iberian retinta, which also has greater market acceptance than the black Iberian, its low-fat as a percentage. The races are more or less degraded by the anarchy of the crosses, being difficult to purebred selection for efficient use in industrial crosses, either one or two stages. vareador.gif (63,950 bytes)

The farrowing takes place on the farm twice a year: June and December: to coincide with those the animal needs the natural resources of the pasture, especially the acorn when pigs possess an age and weight come adecuado.Algunas farms to have three or four farrowing.

Limiting ourselves to the vast majority of farms with two farrowing / year, we have:

* 2nd covering 1st week of August.
* 1 st 2 nd week of farrowing diciembre.Lechones weaned approximately 15 to February 20, which are called Hierbizos.
* 2nd covering 15-28 February.
* 2nd lambing 2nd-3rd week of June.

Weaned approximately 15 and 20 August, which are called agostones.

The sows are dedicated to playing from 8-10 months of age. After the 4 th breeding, are castrated and enter bait in open range.

Boars are dedicated to playing from the 10 months. A 3-4 years were castrated, to be fattened on the open range.

The litter size ranges from 6 to 8 piglets born alive, with an average weaning piglets / farrowing / 6'5 female.

In our meadows type inhabits the Iberian pig farms of 500 ha., Where we consider the following structure:

15 boars: 11 players plus four fatlings for the forthcoming season.

00 sows: 56 players plus 44 cull sows: fatlings montanera campaign or next.

Hierbizos and agostones 650: 4 for renew boars, 44 to renew filthy and 602 to sell or primed in the following mountain.

Production cycle.

Hierbizos: After the use of grass, crops or feed maintenance and No. 1 acorn; reach 80-90 kg. live weight, and are intended for:

* A sale as primal.
* A replacement.
* The use of herbs and cutlivos of the pasture the following spring and primed to think, topdressing, until slaughter at 160 kg. liveweight at 16-18 months.

In more intensive pastures, are forced to feed their food compounds to enter the open range to appropriate weights and sacrifice behind it with 150 kg. and 12 months, but received a long boom, is now in decline because of its lower quality.

The agostones are dedicated to take advantage of scraps and grass of the 1st open range, continuing a maintenance feed or pasture crops to enter the 2nd open range. The animal reaches 160 kg. live weight for slaughter within 18 months.

In the case of the Iberian pig that the product will be, necessarily, be different, depending on the origin of the pork is from acorn, topdressing or bred to think, what distinguishes the market with price gradation. Of course, such price discrimination is given the maximum to the ham, which, using a commercial language, is the flagship product of Iberian pork. This determines to a certain degree of substitution (fraudulent) between ham done on the open range (high quality) and the top dressing, and between this and the coming of Iberian pigs reared to think.
